Did you walk on to the lightweight rowing team?
What impact did rowing have on your Dartmouth experience?
Rowing was at the heart of my Dartmouth experience–from my first-year trip when I first learned about the sport to my last stroke as a Dartmouth oarsman across the finish line of the Henley Royal Regatta a few weeks after I graduated. My memories of four years at Dartmouth are dominated by my experiences with the lightweight crew. My closest friends from college are the people I won and lost with on the water.
What would be lost if Dartmouth eliminates the Lightweight Rowing Team?
Having a collegiate sport that allows for walk-on to compete at the highest level is a uniquely valuable asset to the college. This makes rowing, and particularly lightweight rowing, different from the other varsity sports at Dartmouth. If we get rid of this team, we lose a part of the Dartmouth experience that cannot be replaced.
