Did you walk on to the lightweight rowing team?
What impact did rowing have on your Dartmouth experience?
I learned more from my teammates and coaches on the team than in nearly any class I took at Dartmouth. My teammates were, and continue to be, some of my closest friends and there for me during difficult times. The bonds forged in the boathouse during the long winters, on the water during practices on the beautiful Connecticut river, and in the intensity of race days, stick with me 10 years later much more than any essay or homework assignment.
What impact did rowing have beyond college?
My time as a coxswain for the lightweights taught me more that I use in my everyday career as a lawyer than any class I took at Dartmouth. I learned the values of hard work, discipline and humility. I learned how to communicate effectively and how to lead a team of diverse, driven people toward a common goal. I learned that listening can be more important than just being the loudest. I use all of these things every day in my life now, 10 years later.
