Did you walk on to the lightweight rowing team?
What impact did rowing have on your Dartmouth experience?
Dartmouth rowing introduced me to lifelong friends and gave me a community of individuals who taught me how to be a strong contributor to a successful team. This skill has served me in numerous areas in my professional and personal lives following Dartmouth. Dartmouth rowing helped to shape me as a leader, through the example of my teammates and the shared bond of working to achieve a goal greater than myself. Dartmouth rowing gave me an outlet to connect to the beautiful physical world where Dartmouth is located, as well as a lifelong love of exertion, the outdoors, and the knowledge of how to push myself.
What impact did rowing have beyond college?
Rowing is the single most important lesson in teamwork that I have had in my life. This has enabled to me jump into high performing teams in my career and graduate school experience and immediately make an impact on these teams. The lessons in teamwork that I learned from the lightweight rowing team - how to put the team ahead of myself, make daily progress toward a long term goal, and lift up the team members around me - were instrumental in my proudest professional accomplishment to date of helping to turn around a critical state government agency. It is the lightweight rowing team that first taught me how to be a servant leader, and I believe these lessons have benefited the residents of the state of Massachusetts where I have worked in government.
What would be lost if Dartmouth eliminates the Lightweight Rowing Team?
Dartmouth would be losing a spiritual home for the most dedicated, passionate, and talented alumni/ae I know of. Every lightweight rower frames their entire College experience in terms of their rowing experience, and without this team, these students and alums have no more home at Dartmouth.
